Toilet Installation in St Helens
A toilet that rocks, runs or won't flush properly is the sort of problem you notice every day. We handle toilet installation and repairs across St Helens, from replacing a cracked pan to fitting a modern wall-hung toilet. Matthew carries the common cistern parts, so most repairs are done in one visit.
If you're redoing the whole room, our bathroom fitting service covers everything from the strip-out to the tiling. If it's only the toilet, we're happy to do that on its own.
Types of Toilet We Fit
There's more choice than there used to be. These are the toilets we fit most often:
- Close-coupled toilets. The cistern sits on the back of the pan. The most common type, simple to fit and easy to repair.
- Back-to-wall toilets. The cistern is hidden behind a panel or inside furniture, with only the pan on show. A concealed cistern needs an access panel or a removable flush plate, so parts can be reached later.
- Wall-hung toilets. The pan is fixed to a steel frame built into the wall, with the cistern hidden inside. They look clean and make the floor easy to mop. The frame has to go into a solid or properly built stud wall.
- Comfort height toilets. A taller pan that's easier to sit on and stand up from, popular with older people and anyone with knee or hip trouble.
Most new toilets have a dual flush button, with a short flush and a full flush. If the button sticks or only one side works, it's usually the cable or the flush valve, and both can be replaced.
Running Cisterns and Weak Flushes
A running cistern wastes water all day, and on a meter you pay for it. The usual causes are:
- A faulty fill valve that doesn't shut off, so water goes into the overflow
- A worn flush valve seal, letting water trickle into the pan
- Perished washers on the cistern bolts or inlet
A weak flush is often a flush valve that's worn or set too low, a slipped cable on a push button, or a fill valve that stops filling too early. Slow refilling usually points to a blocked fill valve or a part-closed isolation valve. All of these are part of our everyday plumbing repairs.
Toilet Repair: Leaks, Loose Pans and Seats
Water on the floor around the toilet should never be ignored, as it can rot the floor and come through the ceiling below. Common causes include:
- A leaking pan connector, the joint between the pan and the soil pipe
- A failed seal between a close-coupled cistern and the pan
- Loose cistern bolts or a cracked cistern
A loose pan that rocks will eventually break its seal, so we refix it to the floor or wall. A wobbly toilet seat is usually just worn fixings. If the water seems to be coming from somewhere you can't see, our leak detection service will find it.
Blocked Toilets
We clear simple blockages with a plunger or a toilet auger, which reaches round the bend in the pan. Most blockages are too much paper, wipes or something dropped in by small children.
If the toilet keeps blocking, or other drains back up at the same time, the problem is further down the drain run. We'll tell you if that's the case. We don't do drain jetting, so for that you'd need a drainage company. If your only toilet is overflowing, our emergency plumber service is available 24/7.
Moving a Toilet
Moving a toilet is possible, but the soil pipe sets the limits. The pipe needs a steady fall to the soil stack, and it can't run through joists that can't be notched. A short move is usually fine. A longer one may mean altering the stack or boxing in pipework. Matthew checks the route first and tells you what's realistic.
Downstairs Toilets and Cloakrooms
A downstairs toilet is a handy addition, often squeezed under the stairs or into a cloakroom. The simplest option is a gravity connection to the soil stack, and that's always our first choice.
Where that isn't possible, a macerator is the fallback. It grinds the waste and pumps it through a small pipe. They're useful in cellars, garages and spots far from the stack, but they need a power supply, they're noisier and they don't like wipes. We use them sparingly, and only when they're the right answer.
