Washing Machine Installation in St Helens
A washing machine or dishwasher needs three things: a cold water feed, a waste that drains properly and a connection that won't leak. Get any of them wrong and you'll find out the hard way, usually when water seeps out from under the kickboards. We handle washing machine installation and dishwasher plumbing across St Helens, from a simple swap to running new pipes for an appliance that's never had a space before.
Matthew connects the plumbing. We don't fit kitchen units or worktops, so if you're having a new kitchen, your kitchen fitter does the cabinets and we do the water and waste. It works well, and we're happy to fit around their schedule.
Plumbing In a Washing Machine or Dishwasher for the First Time
If there's no supply or waste where you want the appliance, we put them in. A first-time job usually involves:
- A new cold feed, teed off the nearest cold pipe and finished with a washing machine valve, so the machine can be isolated on its own
- A waste connection, either into the spigot on a sink trap or into a separate standpipe with its own trap
- Checking the fall, so water drains away and doesn't sit in the hose
A sink trap spigot is the neatest option when the appliance sits next to the sink. A standpipe suits machines further away, but it must be the right height, or the machine can siphon and empty itself mid-wash. Dishwashers are connected in the same way, normally to the cold feed. Always check the manufacturer's instructions for your model.
Replacing or Moving an Appliance
Swapping an old machine for a new one is usually quick. We take the opportunity to check the valve still shuts off and the waste is clear, because a stiff old valve is often the weak point. New machines often come with new hoses, and it's worth fitting them rather than reusing perished ones.
Moving a washing machine to a utility room, a garage or a different wall means extending the feed and the waste. We keep pipe runs tidy, clip them properly and protect them from frost if they go into a cold space.
Integrated Dishwashers
An integrated dishwasher sits behind a door panel, so access is tight once it's in. Matthew fits the valve and waste in the next cupboard where you can reach them, and checks the hoses aren't kinked when the machine slides into place. Get it right first time and you won't need to pull it out again.
Leaks Behind Appliances
Water behind a washing machine or dishwasher often goes unnoticed for weeks. Look for swollen kickboards, a damp smell or staining on the floor. The usual causes are:
- Split or perished fill hoses, especially old rubber ones
- A dripping valve, either at the spindle or the joint
- A loose waste hose, or one that's popped off the spigot
- A blocked waste that backs up and overflows under the sink
If you can't find where the water is coming from, our leak detection service traces hidden leaks. If it's pouring out now, turn off the valve or the stopcock and call our 24/7 emergency plumber line.
Fridge-Freezer Water Feeds
American-style fridge freezers with an ice maker or drinks dispenser need a cold water feed. We run a supply to the fridge position, fit an isolation valve where you can reach it and connect the hose. If the fridge sits away from the sink, we'll find the tidiest route for the pipe.
Kitchen Plumbing in St Helens: Sinks, Taps and Wastes
Kitchen plumbing is more than appliances. We also handle:
- New kitchen sinks, connected to the supply and waste once the units are in
- Kitchen taps, including mixer taps and ones you've bought yourself
- Waste traps, replaced when they leak or crack
- Isolation valves under the sink, so a tap can be changed without turning off the house
Slow sinks are often a build-up of grease in the trap, which we clear and refit. For other small jobs around the house, see our plumbing repairs page. Gas hobs and cookers need a Gas Safe engineer, and our cooker and hob fitting service covers them.
