Boiler repair St Helens homeowners can rely on

When the boiler packs in, the house goes cold quickly and the hot water stops. We carry out boiler and central heating repairs across St Helens and the whole borough, from Thatto Heath and Parr to Rainford, Haydock and Newton-le-Willows. The engineer who turns up is Matthew Birchall, Gas Safe registered (number 653634), so you deal with the same professional, not a faceless company, from the first call to the finished job.

Matthew works on combi, system and conventional boilers, and on the central heating that goes with them. He finds the fault, explains it in plain English and agrees the cost with you before any repairs start. If you need us out of hours, our 24/7 emergency plumbing service covers heating breakdowns too.

Common gas boiler and central heating faults

Most calls for a boiler breakdown in St Helens come down to a handful of faults. These are the central heating repairs we see most often in St Helens homes.

No heating or hot water

If you have no central heating and no hot water, the boiler may have locked out, lost pressure or lost power. It can also be a failed pump, a stuck diverter valve on a combi, or a fault with the thermostat or timer. If you have hot water but no heating, a diverter valve or motorised valve is a common cause.

Low pressure in the heating system

A sealed central heating system should sit at around 1 to 1.5 bar on the gauge when cold. If it keeps dropping, there is usually a small leak somewhere on the heating system, a weeping pressure relief valve, or a flat expansion vessel. Topping it up gets the heating going again, but the cause in the system needs to be fixed.

Leaks and drips

Water under the boiler is never something to ignore. It can come from a pump seal, a relief valve, a corroded heat exchanger or a loose joint. Turn the boiler off, catch the water and give us a ring. If water is coming through a ceiling, our burst pipe and leak repair page explains what to do first.

Error codes and lockouts

Modern boilers show a fault code when something is wrong. A reset may clear it once, but if the same code keeps coming back, it is telling you something. Matthew reads the code, tests the parts behind it and fixes the real fault.

Pilot light and ignition problems

Older boilers with a pilot light can go out because of a dirty pilot, a failed thermocouple or a draught. Newer models use electronic ignition, and a failure can be down to the electrode, the gas valve or the fan. Ignition faults are gas work, so they must be handled by Gas Safe engineers.

Noisy central heating

Banging, whistling or gurgling (often called kettling) usually means sludge or scale in the heat exchanger, a failing pump or air in the system. Sludge also causes cold spots at the bottom of radiators. A power flush clears the muck out of the central heating and can improve system efficiency, so the heating is more efficient and warms up faster.

Frozen condensate pipe

In a cold St Helens winter this is one of the most common faults. The plastic condensate pipe running outside freezes, the boiler locks out and the heating stops. Pour warm (not boiling) water along the pipe until it thaws, then reset it. If that does not work, we can reroute or insulate the pipe so it does not happen again.

Boiler pressure gaugeA pressure gauge from 0 to 4 bar. Below 1 bar is too low, 1 to 1.5 bar is normal when the heating is cold, up to about 2 bar is normal when hot, and 3 bar or more is too high. 04 bar Too low1 to 1.5 coldup to 2 hot3+
Most combi boilers sit at 1 to 1.5 bar when the heating is cold. Below 1 bar the boiler may lock out; at 3 bar the pressure relief valve opens. Check your boiler's manual for its exact range.

What to check before you call heating engineers

A few quick checks can save you a call out fee, or at least help Matthew find the fault faster.

  • Pressure gauge: it should read about 1 to 1.5 bar when the heating is off. Below 1 bar, follow your manual to top it up using the filling loop.
  • Thermostat and timer: make sure the thermostat is set above room temperature and the timer is calling for heating. Change the batteries in a wireless thermostat.
  • Power: check the boiler has a display, the fused spur is on and nothing has tripped at the consumer unit.
  • Gas supply: check your gas hob lights. If it does not, the problem may be the meter or the supply to the property.
  • Condensate pipe: in freezing weather, check the outside pipe for ice.
  • Radiators: bleed any radiators that are cold at the top.

If you smell gas, do not touch any switches. Turn off the gas at the meter, open windows and ring the National Gas Emergency number on 0800 111 999.

What you notice Quick check What it usually means
Pressure below 1 bar Top up through the filling loop, as your manual shows If it keeps dropping, there's a leak or a faulty valve
Heating works but no hot water (combi) Check the hot water setting and temperature Often the diverter valve
Boiler locks out in freezing weather Thaw the condensate pipe with warm, not boiling, water The pipe may need lagging or re-routing
Radiators cold at the top Bleed them Air; if it keeps happening, look for a leak
Radiators cold at the bottom No quick fix Sludge; a power flush is likely
Smell of gas Leave and call 0800 111 999 Not a boiler repair job until the gas is safe

Boiler repair or boiler installation?

Most boilers last about 10 to 15 years. A good repair on a younger boiler is nearly always worth doing. On an old boiler, it pays to weigh up the cost of repairs against a replacement.

We would suggest thinking about a new boiler if:

  • it is over 15 years old and parts are expensive or hard to get
  • you have needed several repairs in the last year or two
  • your energy bills keep rising and it is not a condensing model
  • the heat exchanger has failed on an older appliance

That said, a power flush and a new pump can give an older system a few more good years.

Matthew will give you straight, professional advice and never push a replacement you do not need. If it makes sense, our new boiler installation page explains the whole process, from the survey to commissioning. A modern, efficient boiler can make a real difference to your energy bills.

Boiler makes we repair in St Helens

Matthew repairs most makes of gas boiler found in St Helens homes, including:

  • Worcester Bosch
  • Vaillant
  • Ideal
  • Baxi
  • Viessmann
  • Glow-worm
  • Potterton, Main, Alpha and others

He carries common parts in the van for quality repairs first time where possible, and anything else can usually be ordered for the next working day. If you are not sure what you have, the make and model are normally on the front panel or on a label underneath.

24/7 emergency repair for heating breakdowns

Central heating systems do not pick a good time to break, and St Helens winters are no time to be without heating. We take emergency calls 24 hours a day, every day of the year, and can often come out at short notice. Ring 07759 813431 and you will speak to Matthew directly, not a call centre.

When an emergency repair happens out of hours, there is a call-out fee for emergency visits, which we explain on the phone before we set off. If the job cannot be finished on the night, Matthew will make the heating safe and tell you exactly what happens next. We work tidily, use dust sheets and aim to minimise disruption to your house.

Plumbing and heating services in St Helens

Repairs are one part of the heating services we offer in St Helens. Because Matthew is a gas engineer and a plumber, one visit can sort the boiler and the rest of the plumbing and heating. Our heating services include:

  • a yearly boiler service and gas safety checks
  • central heating installation and repair, including new radiators and controls
  • power flush to clear sludge from the central heating system and improve efficiency
  • boiler installation and replacement, and central heating installation in extensions
  • general plumbing, from a dripping kitchen tap to a new toilet

Unlike many heating engineers, we are a small, reliable local company, so the person you speak to is the person who does the job. Plumbing repairs and central heating repairs are handled with the same care, and every customer gets the same professional service.

Why an annual boiler service matters

An annual service is the best way to avoid an unexpected breakdown. During a boiler service, Matthew will inspect and clean the boiler, check the gas and flue for safety, and spot worn parts before they fail. Manufacturers recommend an annual service, and most warranties need one to stay valid. Booking your boiler service in late summer means the heating is ready before the cold weather arrives.

Gas services and gas appliances safety

Only engineers on the Gas Safe Register can legally work on a gas boiler or other gas appliances. Some heating engineers and plumbing companies will quote a low price and then cut corners on gas safety. We do things properly. After every gas repair, Matthew checks the gas pressure, runs a tightness test where needed, and checks the flue and combustion.

Our gas services cover boilers, cookers, hobs and gas fires across St Helens, and every heating repair finishes with safety checks. If you need a cooker or hob connected, see our gas cooker and hob fitting service. You can check Matthew on the Gas Safe Register website or ask to see his ID card at the door.

Carbon monoxide warning signs

A faulty gas appliance can produce carbon monoxide, which you cannot see or smell. Watch out for headaches, dizziness or nausea that ease when you leave the house, a lazy yellow or orange flame, or soot and staining around the boiler. Fit an audible carbon monoxide alarm near any gas appliance, test it monthly, and call 0800 111 999 if you suspect a leak.

Boiler repair: frequently asked questions

How much should a boiler repair cost?

It depends on the fault, the part needed and how easy the boiler is to get at. A sticking diverter valve or a frozen condensate pipe is a very different job to a failed heat exchanger. Matthew finds the fault first, then agrees the price with you before any repair work starts. Central heating repairs in St Helens are priced the same way, so customers always know the cost first.

How much is a call out for a boiler?

The charge for a visit depends on when you need us and what we find. An out of hours emergency visit is priced differently to a booked daytime visit. We will always explain how the charge works when you ring, before Matthew sets off, so your heating repair has no hidden charges. Be wary of engineers who will not explain their charges upfront. A booked boiler service, plumbing job or central heating installation is quoted separately.

Can a gas engineer fix a boiler?

Yes, as long as they are Gas Safe registered and qualified for gas boilers. Only Gas Safe engineers can legally work on a gas appliance. You can check any engineer on the Gas Safe Register website or ask to see their ID card. Matthew's number is 653634, and professional heating engineers will happily show their card.

Are plumbers and boiler engineers the same?

Not always. Any plumber can fix a dripping tap, but only a Gas Safe registered engineer can legally work on a gas boiler. Matthew is a professional plumber and a Gas Safe engineer, so one visit can cover the boiler, the radiators, the central heating and the plumbing. Many heating engineers in St Helens only do gas work.

Should a 20 year old boiler be replaced?

Usually, yes. Most boilers last around 10 to 15 years, and at 20 years parts get hard to find and efficiency is well below a modern condensing model. If it keeps breaking down, replacing it normally costs less over time than paying for repeat repairs. Most heating engineers would agree, and a boiler installation can lower your energy bills.

Is boiler breakdown covered on house insurance?

Standard buildings and contents insurance does not usually cover a breakdown, although some policies cover damage caused by a leak. Boiler cover is normally a separate policy or an add-on. Check your documents and keep your service record, as most policies need a yearly boiler service by qualified heating engineers.
