Boiler service St Helens homeowners can trust
A yearly boiler service is the simplest way to keep your heating safe, efficient and reliable. We carry out boiler servicing across St Helens and the whole borough, including Haydock, Rainhill, Billinge and Newton-le-Willows. Matthew Birchall, our Gas Safe registered plumbing and heating engineer (number 653634), does every gas boiler service himself, so the engineer you book is the engineer who turns up.
Whatever your boiler type, you get the same careful, high standard of boiler servicing and a written record at the end. Every homeowner gets a clear explanation of what was found.
Why annual boiler servicing matters
Most St Helens homeowners only think about the boiler when the heating stops working. Regular servicing changes that, and a proper service covers safety, reliability and running costs. It keeps your gas boiler working safely, helps it run efficiently and spots potential issues before they become an emergency repair on a cold night.
- Safety: a gas boiler that is burning badly can produce carbon monoxide, which you cannot see or smell. A service checks the combustion, the flue and the safety features.
- Reliability: worn seals, a blocked condensate trap or a weak fan show up during inspections, long before they cause a breakdown.
- Lower running costs: a clean burner uses less gas for the same heat, so the cost of heating your home goes down.
- Warranty: most manufacturers need a yearly boiler service by a Gas Safe engineer, with a record to prove it.
- Insurance and cover: many boiler cover plans and some home insurance policies expect regular maintenance, so keep your service records safe.
What a gas boiler service includes
A typical boiler service in St Helens takes around an hour, depending on the boiler and heating system. Here is what he checks.
- Visual inspection: the boiler, pipework and surrounding area are checked for leaks, corrosion, scorch marks and signs of poor combustion.
- Flue and seals: the flue is checked along its length and at the terminal outside, and the case seals are inspected so fumes cannot escape.
- Burner and heat exchanger: where the manufacturer calls for it, the case is opened and the burner, heat exchanger and electrodes are inspected, with cleaning where needed.
- Flue gas analysis: a calibrated analyser measures the combustion, so we know the boiler is burning cleanly and working safely.
- Gas pressure and rate: the working pressure and gas rate are checked against the manufacturer's figures.
- Safety devices: flame supervision, the pressure relief valve and other safety devices are tested.
- Condensate trap: cleaning the trap and checking the condensate pipe is especially important before the heating season.
- Boiler pressure and expansion vessel: the system pressure is checked and the expansion vessel charge tested and topped up if needed.
- Controls: the thermostat, timer and hot water controls are checked so the central heating comes on when it should.
- Service record: you get a written record of the checks and readings, plus any advice, for your boiler servicing history.
If Matthew finds anything that needs attention, he will explain it and agree the cost of any repair with you before doing the work.
Combi, system and regular boilers we service
We service all the common heating systems found in St Helens homes, from most makes including Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Ideal, Baxi, Viessmann and Glow-worm. Different heating systems need slightly different boiler servicing.
- Combi boilers: heat water on demand with no tank. A combi service pays close attention to the plate heat exchanger and the hot water flow.
- System boilers: work with a hot water cylinder, so the pump, valves and pressure are checked as part of the service.
- Regular boilers: also called conventional or heat only boilers, with a cold water tank in the loft and a cylinder. Regular boilers have more parts in the system to look at, including the feed and expansion tank.
Each of these heating systems needs a proper gas boiler service, once a year, by an engineer who knows what to look for.
Gas Safe boiler servicing you can check
By law, only Gas Safe registered engineers can work on a gas boiler in St Helens or anywhere else in the UK. Boiler servicing by anyone else is illegal and dangerous. Before anyone opens your boiler, ask to see their Gas Safe ID card, or check them on the Gas Safe Register website. A genuine engineer will always show it, and Matthew does.
Every gas boiler service includes safety inspections. If the boiler is found to be unsafe, Matthew will explain the problem and, where needed, make it safe so your household is protected.
Carbon monoxide signs to watch for
Between services, look out for headaches, dizziness or nausea that ease when you go outside, a yellow or orange flame instead of a crisp blue one, or soot and staining around the boiler. Fit a carbon monoxide alarm near the boiler and test it regularly. If you suspect a leak, turn off the gas and ring 0800 111 999.
Energy efficiency and your central heating
A dirty boiler or a poorly set burner wastes gas. Boiler servicing and cleaning keep your boiler running at its best, so your central heating warms the house faster, costs less to run and gets through a St Helens winter without fuss.
Boiler servicing is also a good time to look at the wider central heating. If radiators have cold spots, the system may be full of sludge, and a power flush can restore efficiency. If you have an unvented hot water cylinder, it needs its own annual service, covered on our unvented cylinder page.
Boiler repair and boiler servicing in one visit
If something in the heating is worn or faulty, it can often be sorted on the same visit. Matthew carries common replacement parts, so small jobs such as a new seal, a cleaned condensate trap or a topped up expansion vessel rarely need a second trip. For bigger faults, our boiler repair service covers everything from leaks to error codes, and our 24/7 emergency plumbing service covers breakdowns across St Helens at any hour.
Regular maintenance also keeps repair costs down. A small repair spotted early costs far less than a boiler repair on a broken boiler in January. Because Matthew also handles plumbing, central heating repair and installation work, he can deal with a dripping valve or a leaking radiator while he is there.
Boiler installation or another year of service?
If your boiler is getting old, boiler servicing is a good point to ask whether it is still worth keeping. Matthew will give you an honest view, based on the condition of the boiler, the likely repair cost and how efficient it is. Sometimes a repair is the right answer, sometimes replacement is. He will only recommend a boiler installation when it genuinely makes sense.
If it does, our new boiler installation page explains the process, from survey to commissioning. A new boiler comes with the manufacturer's standard warranty, which we register for you, and keeping up annual servicing keeps it valid.
Landlords, gas safety and boiler servicing
If you are a landlord rather than a homeowner living in the property, the law requires an annual gas safety check on every gas appliance, which is separate from a boiler service. Many St Helens landlords book both on the same visit to save time. See our landlord gas safety certificate page for the details. Late summer and early autumn are the best times to book any boiler service, before the heating is needed every day. We cover the whole St Helens borough rather than the wider North West, so Matthew is never far away.
