Burst Pipe Repair in St Helens, Day or Night

A burst pipe can send gallons of water through a ceiling in minutes, so speed matters. We offer 24/7 burst pipe repair across St Helens, from Rainford to Newton-le-Willows. Matthew will talk you through shutting off the water on the phone, then come out to stop the leak and repair it properly.

If water is pouring through right now, close your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and open the cold taps to drain the pipes. Our emergency plumber page has a full checklist of what to do while you wait.

What Makes Pipes Burst or Leak

Most leaks have a simple cause. Knowing it helps us stop the same thing happening again, and these are the usual culprits:

  • Freezing. Water expands as it turns to ice and splits the pipe. The leak often only shows once it thaws.
  • Corrosion. Old copper, iron and lead pipes thin out over time, especially at bends and joints.
  • High water pressure. Too much pressure strains joints, valves and flexible hoses.
  • Poor joints. A badly made solder joint or an overtightened compression fitting can weep for months before it fails.
  • Nails and screws. A carpet gripper, floorboard nail or picture hook driven into a hidden pipe is one of the most common causes we see.

Leak Detection: Finding a Hidden Leak

Not every leak announces itself with a jet of water. Many drip away quietly under floors or inside walls, causing damage you can't see until it's serious. Here's how to check, and our leak detection page explains how we trace them.

Try the water meter test

Turn off every tap, and make sure the washing machine, dishwasher and toilets aren't filling. Then find your water meter, note the reading and check it again after 20 to 30 minutes. If it has moved, water is escaping somewhere between the meter and your taps.

Other signs of a hidden leak

  • Damp patches or staining on ceilings, walls or floors
  • Mould or a musty smell that keeps coming back
  • The sound of running water when nothing is on
  • Warm spots on a floor, which can point to a leaking heating pipe
  • A combi boiler that keeps losing pressure and needs topping up

That last one usually means a leak on the heating system rather than the water supply. It could be a weeping radiator valve or a pipe under the floor, so our central heating repairs page is worth a look too.

How We Handle Burst Pipe Repair in St Helens Homes

Once we've found the leak, Matthew chooses the right repair for the pipe and the space he's working in. The usual options are:

  • Compression fittings for a quick, reliable joint on copper pipe, without heat
  • Push-fit fittings where space is tight or the pipe is plastic
  • Soldered joints for a neat, permanent finish on copper
  • Replacing a section when a length of pipe is corroded or split along its length
  • Lagging any pipe in a cold spot, so the same problem doesn't come back next winter

If a proper repair has to wait for a part, Matthew will make it safe first, capping off the damaged pipe so you have water back in the rest of the house. Where it helps, he'll also fit an isolation valve, so a future problem can be shut off without turning off the whole supply.

We lift as few floorboards as possible and tidy up afterwards. If the leak has come from a tap, toilet or appliance, that's covered under our general plumbing repairs. Water leaking from a hot water cylinder needs urgent attention, and our hot water cylinder page explains why.

Frozen Pipes in Winter

Cold snaps in St Helens catch out pipes in lofts, garages, outside walls and outbuildings. If a tap gives nothing but a trickle on a freezing morning, a pipe has probably frozen. Turn off the stopcock before it thaws, then warm the pipe gently with a hairdryer or hot water bottle, working back from the tap.

Never use a blowtorch or naked flame. If the pipe has already split, keep the stopcock off and call us. To prevent it, lag exposed pipes, fit an outside tap cover and keep the heating ticking over on low during cold spells.

Supply Pipe or Internal Pipework: Who Pays?

St Helens' water mains are run by United Utilities. If the leak is on the public side, meaning the main in the road or the pipe up to your boundary stop tap, report it to them and they'll repair it.

Anything after the boundary is private. That means the underground supply pipe into your house and all the pipes inside are the homeowner's job, or the landlord's if you rent. A wet patch on the drive or a meter that won't stop turning often points to a supply pipe leak, and we can confirm which side it's on.

Take Photos for Your Insurance

Before you start mopping up, take photos of the burst pipe, the water damage and any ruined belongings. Keep receipts for anything you have to replace. When we've finished, we can give you a written note of what failed and how we fixed it, which most insurers will ask for.

Burst pipes & leaks: frequently asked questions

How do I know if I have a hidden water leak?

Turn off every tap and appliance, then watch your water meter for 20 to 30 minutes. If the numbers keep moving, water is escaping somewhere. Damp patches, a musty smell, the sound of running water or a boiler that keeps losing pressure are other clues.

Can a burst pipe be repaired without replacing the whole run?

Usually, yes. We cut out the damaged section and join in new pipe with compression, push-fit or soldered fittings. If the pipe is badly corroded along its length, we'll explain why replacing more of it makes sense before doing anything.

Who is responsible for a leak on the supply pipe?

United Utilities looks after the water main and the pipe up to your boundary stop tap. The supply pipe from there into your house, and every pipe inside it, is the homeowner's responsibility, or the landlord's if you rent. If you're not sure where the leak is, we can find out for you.

Will my home insurance pay for a burst pipe?

Many home insurance policies cover water damage from a burst pipe, but cover for finding and repairing the leak varies. Check your policy and call your insurer early. Photos of the damage and a written note of what we found and fixed will help your claim.

How can I stop my pipes freezing in winter?

Lag pipes in the loft, garage and any outside walls, and fit a cover on your outside tap. Keep the heating on low when you're away in cold weather, and open the loft hatch on very cold nights so some warmth gets up there.
